How to Replace the AC Power Port on a JBL PartyBox 310

Tools & Parts Needed

  • Replacement AC Power Port Assembly
  • Torx T15 & T10 Screwdrivers
  • Plastic Pry Tools
  • Soldering Iron & Solder
  • Desoldering Braid or Solder Sucker
  • Safety Glasses (Mandatory)
  • A well-ventilated workspace

Replacement Steps

  1. EXTREME DANGER WARNING: This repair involves working directly with the speaker's high-voltage power supply. Capacitors on the board can hold a dangerous electrical charge even when unplugged. This guide is for experienced professionals only. Attempting this repair without proper knowledge can result in severe injury or death. WE STRONGLY ADVISE SEEKING PROFESSIONAL SERVICE.
  2. Disconnect and Discharge: Unplug the speaker from the wall and ensure it is off. Let the speaker sit unplugged for at least one hour to allow capacitors to discharge. Disconnecting the internal battery is also a critical safety step once inside.
  3. Remove the Rear Panel: Place the speaker face down on a soft surface. Remove all Torx screws holding the large rear panel in place. Carefully lift the panel off.
  4. Locate the Power Supply Unit (PSU): Identify the circuit board to which the AC power port is physically attached. This is the PSU.
  5. Disconnect the PSU: Carefully disconnect all wire harnesses leading from the PSU to the speaker's mainboard, battery, and other components. Take clear photos before you disconnect anything to ensure you can reassemble it correctly.
  6. Remove the PSU from the Enclosure: Unscrew the mounting screws that hold the PSU board to the speaker's internal frame. Carefully remove the board from the speaker.
  7. Desolder the Old Port: Using your desoldering braid or solder sucker, carefully heat the solder joints on the back of the board where the AC port's pins are connected. Remove all the old solder from the through-holes. This requires skill to avoid damaging the circuit board.
  8. Remove the Damaged Port: Once all pins are free of solder, the old AC port should come loose. You may need to gently pry it from the board.
  9. Install and Solder the New Port: Place the new AC port into the board, ensuring it is flush and correctly oriented. Turn the board over and apply fresh solder to each pin, creating clean, strong, and shiny solder joints. Check for any solder bridges between pins.
  10. Reinstall the PSU and Reconnect: Secure the PSU back into the enclosure with its mounting screws. Referencing your photos, reconnect all the wire harnesses to the correct sockets on the PSU and mainboard. Double-check every connection.
  11. Test Before Closing: Before sealing the speaker, carefully plug the AC cord in and check for signs of power (e.g., charging indicator). Do not touch any internal components while it is plugged in. If it works, unplug it.
  12. Final Reassembly: Secure the rear panel with all its screws. Your repair is complete.

AC Port Repair FAQs

Is soldering absolutely required for this repair?

Yes. The AC power port is soldered directly onto the main power supply circuit board. It cannot be replaced without proficient soldering and desoldering skills.

My AC port is loose but still works sometimes. Should I replace it?

A loose AC port is a major fire hazard. The intermittent connection can cause arcing, which generates intense heat and can damage the speaker or start a fire. It should be repaired or replaced immediately.

What are the biggest risks with this repair?

The primary risk is severe electric shock from charged capacitors on the power supply board. The secondary risk is causing a short circuit during reassembly, which could permanently destroy the speaker. A poorly soldered joint can also fail and become a fire risk.

The speaker works fine on battery but won't power on or charge with the AC cord. Is the port broken?

That is the most common cause. It indicates a failure in the AC power circuit, which starts at the port. It could also be a failure of the power supply board itself, but a physically damaged or loose port is the first thing to suspect.

Can I use a generic AC port from an electronics store?

It is highly discouraged. You must use a replacement part that has the exact same pin layout, size, and electrical rating as the original. Using an incorrect part will not fit and could be extremely dangerous. Source the exact part from a reputable JBL parts dealer.
